The Calcutta High Court will not interfere in the Panchayat elections. The Calcutta High Court has rejected the application of Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in this regard.
Suvendu had filed a public interest litigation in the court regarding the Panchayat elections. On Tuesday, a division bench of Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava said that the High Court will no longer interfere in the Panchayat elections. The State Election Commission will take a decision in this regard.
Suvendu, Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, had filed a PIL in the High Court challenging the decision to enumerate the OBC community in the state. He alleged that in 2011, the enumeration of Scheduled Castes and Tribes was done but Other Backward Classes (OBCs) were not enumerated. In reply, the commission said that they are doing this calculation by going door-to-door.
On Tuesday, Suvendu's public interest litigation came before a division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj. The bench said, "For the time being, the High Court will not interfere in election-related matters." All decisions in this regard will be taken by the State Election Commission.
